 TVA Installs
Warning System at Guntersville Dam
GUNTERSVILLE
, Ala. – TVA has installed a new safety warning system at Guntersville
Dam to help improve public safety during water releases from the dam.
The
warning system, scheduled to begin operating today, includes signs,
warning horns and strobe lights that warn the public of water
discharges through the dam and of rapidly rising water downstream from
the dam. TVA also has installed safety warning systems at Wilson Dam
and at Pickwick Dam.
“The horns and strobe lights will automatically be activated prior to
water level changes as a safety warning to the public,” said TVA Senior
Vice President of River Operations Janet Herrin. “When the horns and
strobe lights are activated, boaters and the public should quickly move
to safe areas.”Before TVA begins generating power and releasing water
from the dam, warning horns and strobe lights mounted near the
downstream discharge area will be activated.
Strobe
lights, warning horns and electronic message boards on both sides of
the dam will be activated before spilling occurs. The message boards
and strobe lights will remain activated until the gates are closed.
TVA
is the nation’s largest public power provider and is completely
self-financing. TVA provides power to large industries and 159 power
distributors that serve approximately 8.8 million consumers in seven
southeastern states. TVA also manages the Tennessee River and its
tributaries to provide multiple benefits, including flood damage
reduction, navigation, water quality and recreation. _______________________________________________________ Alabama's Water Management Policy
Affects Everyone's 'LIfe on the Water
September 23, 2008 Guntersville,
AL
State of Alabama legislators want a
water management policy, especially since we don't seem to have one.
"If we don't address the issue now,
we'll have to address it when we have a meltdown," commented Rep. A.
J. McCampbell, who leads the subcommittee for Conservation and Drought
Management for the Joint Legislative Committee.
This bi-partisan effort is a bold
attempt to establish a statewide strategy for managing Alabama's water
supply. Chaired by Senator Kim Benefield and Rep. Greg Canfield, Tuesday's
meeting was held for stakeholders. That's anyone with interest in our
waterways, water supply or water in general.
