|

Kiplinger's prestigious list of 2009 Best Cities was released this week and cities along waterways of the Deep South fared extremely well.
Noticeably, cities in LIFE ON THE WATER's coverage area fell well under the national index for cost of living. Cities like Dothan, Alabama, Memphis, Tennessee and Clarksville, Tennessee were among the best for cost of living index but also had high rates of growth for salary averages, an extremely good combination in recessionary times.
The most important factor in the selection was Kiplinger's 'creative class'. This formula was based on a city's job diversity and spectrum comprised of scientists, engineers and educators but also writers, artists, and entertainers. According to Kiplinger, this mix will be the key to rising above recessionary times.
Cities that offered a wide array of cultural and recreational experiences rose to the top of the list.
Cities in our coverage area that fared well are Gadsden, Alabama Florence/Muscle Shoals, Alabama Nashville/Murfreesboro, Tennessee Johnson City, Tennessee Morristown, Tennessee Chattanooga, Tennessee Knoxville, Tennessee Cleveland, Tennessee Birmingham, Alabama Columbus, Georgia
